Improving road safety in Potterspury
A new Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) system has arrived in Potterspury to improve road safety and warn drivers about their speed.
Published: 21 April 2025
The new sign is currently in position outside 75 High Street and will alert vehicles travelling along the High Street towards the Village Hall of their speed. It’s a sensitive machine that can track a vehicle’s speed from the Meadow View turning to just short of Homestead Way.
It measures each vehicle’s incoming speed and outgoing speed. The system therefore registers whether vehicles are slowing down or accelerating as they approach the sign.
The VAS is set to turn red at 30 mph (the designated speed limit on the High Street) and it also displays THANK YOU in yellow when it detects cars driving below 30 mph. It does not identify individual vehicles, but it does record the time that they were detected.
It also measures the number of vehicle movements per hour.
The Parish Council has purchased the VAS with the help of a grant from funding from the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner OPFCC Small Grant Scheme in response to residents’ concerns about speeding traffic on the village roads. Proven to reduce vehicle speeds by up to 15% and accidents on the road by up to 30%, VAS signs are also an effective replacement for speed bumps. It is battery-powered and can be moved to different locations around the village. We hope that it will improve road safety in Potterspury.
